Are there one or more paths to truth? Or is truth a pathless land? And who is searching? What is transformative insight?
Hillary Rodrigues (University of Lethbridge) is a professor of Eastern Religious traditions, particularly Hindu and Buddhist philosophies and cultures. A former teacher and administrator at the Krishnamurti school that once existed at the site of the Swanwick Centre, he has published several scholarly studies on aspects of Krishnamurti’s thought. Hillary has given invited presentations on Krishnamurti’s teachings in New York, New Delhi, Victoria, and Ojai, California. His books include Krishnamurti’s Insight (Pilgrims) and Introducing Hinduism (Routledge).
Although Hillary is a scholar by profession, this is not an academic retreat. Instead, Hillary will draw upon personal understanding to explore the implications of Krishnamurti’s renowned statement, “Truth is a pathless land.” Retreat participants will be able to inquire together into the meaning of that statement and the many related questions it evokes. For instance, one might ask, “What is the land to which the statement refers?” Or, “What does Krishnamurti mean by truth?” Or “Does ‘pathless’ mean that there is no previously travelled route?” Such explorations during this retreat are intended to serve as an opportunity to engage earnestly with the question of spiritual realization. The retreat will be of interest to those gripped with the complexities of transformative insight, as well as those who are curious about the nature of spiritual awakening.
Friday Evening Public Talk in Victoria
May 24, 2013, 7:30 pm
Hillary will provide a free talk and Q&A session at the Church of Truth entitled “Who Goes There? Searching for the Searcher”. This is a prelude to the retreat he will be holding on the following Saturday and Sunday at the Swanwick Centre. The talk will discuss the notions of the seeker, seeking, and the sought, and their relationship to the attainment of transformative insight, with particular reference to the teachings of J. Krishnamurti.
Please note, this retreat is presented in two parts. Part 1 will take place in the form of a public introductory session on Friday evening, 7:30 pm, at the Victoria Church of Truth at 111 Superior Street (by donation). Retreat participants will overnight at Swanwick Centre and reconvene there on Saturday morning, through to Sunday afternoon, for Part 2.
