Insight through Inquiry

This weekend residential workshop will take place May 15-16, 2010 at the Swanwick Centre, located in a spectacular 32 acre ocean-front setting in the Metchosin district of Victoria, B.C. This workshop is facilitated by Prof. Hillary Rodrigues and is preceded by an introductory evening presentation by him on Friday, May 14, 7 pm at Queenswood in Victoria.

Hillary Rodrigues (Ph.D. McMaster) is a professor of Religious Studies at the University of Lethbridge. A specialist in Eastern religious traditions, he is the author of various books and scholarly articles, including World Religions: A Guide to the Essentials (co-authored with Dr. Thomas Robinson), Introducing Hinduism (Routledge), Ritual Worship of the Great Goddess (SUNY Press), and Krishnamurti’s Insight (Pilgrims Publishing).

Prior to taking up the academic study of religion, Hillary travelled extensively in the Americas and Asia. He was also a teacher/administrator at the Wolf Lake School in Victoria, operated by the Krishnamurti Educational Cente of Canada. In his teachings, Hillary draws from the well-spring of his experience, and has been honoured with his university’s Distinguished Teaching Medal. He also currently holds the Board of Governors Teaching Chair, overseeing the institution’s Centre for the Advancement of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CAETL).

In his introductory talk on Friday evening in Victoria, Hillary draws upon both personal and studied understandings of pivotal, transformative insight. In particular, he will address the crucial role that insight can play in radically changing our understanding of ourselves and the world. He will focus on the place of “inquiry” in the quest for insight, and the capacity to engage in that inquiry in our daily lives. The talk will be followed by a Question and Answer session. This is Hillary’s first public talk in which he speaks about, and from, his own experience of awakening which occurred over 30 years ago.

The follow-up weekend workshop at Swanwick Centre will include two additional talks with Questions and Answers, on Saturday and Sunday morning, individual sessions with Hillary, videos by other spiritual teachers on insight, opportunities for dialogue and some tranquil time in a splendid setting inquiring into the nature of Mind, Self, and Truth.

The talk and weekend retreat/workshop will be of interest to those deeply committed to the quest for freedom and truth, to those who have in varying degrees actually experienced and lived with awakening to the mystery of existence, as well as to those who are merely curious about the possibility of spiritual awakening.

The workshop is also open to day participants.
