Why Not This?

Event: A public talk & weekend workshop with Dr. Hillary Rodrigues on"Why Not This? An Inquiry into Reality, Image and Imagination."

Date: July 31-August 2, 2015 (Fri. evening 7 pm to Sun. afternoon 4:30 pm)

Hillary Rodrigues (University of Lethbridge) is a professor of Eastern religious traditions, particularly Hindu and Buddhist philosophies and cultures. A former teacher and administrator at the Krishnamurti school that once existed at the site of the Krishnamurti Educational Centre of Canada, he has published books and articles on aspects of Krishnamurti’s thought. Hillary has given invited presentations on Krishnamurti’s teachings in New York, New Delhi, Victoria, and Ojai, California. His books include Krishnamurti’s Insight and Introducing Hinduism.

Although he is a scholar by profession, this is not an academic retreat. Instead, Hillary will draw upon personal understanding to explore the question, “Why Not This?”

Activities will include talks with Q&A, dialogues, a video and meditative nature walks.

Hillary will explore the two ways in which the question“Why Not This?”can be taken, namely, Why “not this”? and Why not “this”? The “this” refers to what Krishnamurti calls, “the what-is” and the “not-this” to the concept of non-attachment to concepts about “the what-is”.

The “what-is” is what you are, not what you would like to be; it is not the ideal because the ideal is fictitious, but it is actually what you are doing, thinking, and feeling from moment to moment. “What-is” is the actual, and to understand the actual requires awareness, a very alert, swift mind.
