Fragmentation and Wholeness

Weekend retreat and public talkwith Prof. Hillary Rodrigues

Date: Friday, August 26, 7pm to Sunday, August 28, 4:30 pm.

Hillary Rodrigues (University of Lethbridge) is a professor of Eastern religious traditions, specializing in Hinduism and Buddhism. A former teacher and administrator at a Krishnamurti school, he has published books and articles on aspects of Krishnamurti’s thought. Hillary has given invited presentations on Krishnamurti’s teachings in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and India. His books include Krishnamurti’s Insight and Introducing Hinduism.

Although Hillary is a scholar by profession, this is not an academic retreat. Instead, we will draw upon personal understandings to explore the topic: “Fragmentation and Wholeness.”

When we notice how religious, nationalistic, political, and other labels divide us, we need to inquire more deeply into the mechanisms of division. Does thought divide the world, and if so, is thought itself a problem? Or do misidentifications with fragments of a thought-divided world cause us and those around us pain?

Our retreat will provide the space for us to inquire deeply into these questions, and actually observe the processes of fragmentation as they occur within and around us. We shall endeavour to discover if it is possible to live without divisions, which restrict us from experiencing the love that is the hallmark of a unified life. This theme is introduced in the quote below.

Control implies division, the controller and the thing to be controlled; this division, as all division, brings about conflict and distortion in action and behaviour. This fragmentation is the work of thought, onefragmenttrying to control the other parts — call this onefragmentthe controller or whatever name you will. This division is artificial and mischievous. Actually, the controller is the controlled. Thought in its very nature is fragmentary and this causes confusion and sorrow. . . Meditation is the complete transformation of thought and its activities. Harmony is not the fruit of thought; it comes with the perception of the whole.
