An Uncommon Collaboration: David Bohm & J. Krishnamurti

A weekend retreat with David Moody
September 21-23, 2018 (Fri 7:30 pm – Sun 4:30 pm)

Author David Moody will introduce his book, An Uncommon Collaboration:  David Bohm and J. Krishnamurti.  He served as Director of the Oak Grove School in Ojai, California, the position he held at the time of Krishnamurti’s death in 1986.  His experiences in that role are described in his previous book, The Unconditioned Mind:  J. Krishnamurti and the Oak Grove School.

This weekend presentation will explore the quarter-century relationship between Krishnamurti and renowned theoretical physicist David Bohm who Einstein called “my spiritual son” and the Dalai Lama referred to as “my scientific advisor”.

The point of departure for the exploration will be the question: What prompted a man like Bohm, steeped in a conventional, mainstream scientific background, to become interested and involved in the radical philosophy of Krishnamurti?  This inquiry will include examining Bohm’s contributions to quantum physics and his political and philosophical interests and showing the points of contact with the teachings of Krishnamurti.

The presentation will give attention to the content of the many dialogues between the two men, including video and audio excerpts from their conversations.  It will be supplemented by numerous anecdotes and personal observations of Krishnamurti and Bohm from Moody’s extensive interactions with both men.

In addition, the presentation will include a discussion of several points of inquiry between Bohm and Krishnamurti that remain unresolved.  These include the nature of psychological time, the observer and the observed, the process of group dialogue, and whether thought can become aware of its own movement.

The weekend will include numerous opportunities for questions and participation by those in attendance, as well as some engagement in group dialogue.  The presentation will conclude with an overview of the life and work of Krishnamurti, and reflections on ways and means of continuing the exploration and process of self-understanding that he set in motion.
